This, like the homofascism post, is probably going to evolve over the next few days as it goes from spitball notes to something coherent.
But the first point I want to make is that the films' structure narratively is eerily similar to the narrative structure of Sailor Moon's initial broadcast run in the early 90s. By this, I mean the often commented upon issue of the sequel(s*) being closer to remake than continuation, which is a complaint I don't actually agree with specifically because Sailor Moon did the same fucking thing, including relegating it's Extremely Famous and Influential Opening Season (tm) to little more than a prequel which explains but doesn't ultimately impact the future story beats.
Also, I think it's entirely within reason and valid to refer to the first movie as a prequel for the larger 2-part movie that came next, and that is how I will refer to it.
And yes, I understand that you can very easily say, "every TV show does the same thing; prequel like seasons are the natural result of not knowing if you will be renewed until after production wraps. You could be making this comparison about Stargate and it would be just as legitimate." True.
But not every TV show was extremely popular with young and teenage girls in the 90s and featured death and resurrection as season closers/openers. Also, I'm just saying, a lot of people somehow gloss over the fact that teen girls reading BSSM definitely saw way more high fashion and fetish gear than the average teen girl. Is Trinity just Haruka with a dye job? Sources say, yes.
Things to come back and expand on later:
--Morpheus's name is like that because they ran out of other night time deities with Artemis, Luna, Diana, and Selene/Serena all taken.

--I need to look up the screenshots of the tin cat, aluminum mouse etc enemies but that'll be relevant
--The gender swappy pop star ones, starlights? Vs the gender swappy white-coat one from the first movie (jfc those death scenes were fucked up btw)

--Trinity is framed on screen (and narratively) in the prince/knight role (Sayaka, Haruka, Tuxedo Mask, etc)
--I physically cannot make myself refer to Neo with he/him pronouns anymore, I'm pretty sure I watched Keanu Reeves in the world's subtlest drag performance for like 7 hours in the last 3 days.
--I feel like I have something to say about Niobe but I don't know what so /shrugemoji
--APPARENTLY THE SEX SCENE I AM THINKING OF IS FROM PROMO ART OR A DIFFERENT SHOW OR SOMETHING BUT I SWEAR TO FUCKING GOD I WILL FIND IT AND I WILL SIDE BY SIDE THESE SCREENSHOTS BECAUSE I HAVE SEEN THAT THIGH PLACEMENT BEFORE I WAS OBSESSED WITH IT AT AGE 14 YOU CANNOT HIDE YOUR HORNY TEENAGE SECRETS FROM ME LILY AND/OR LANA
